Behringen

Behringen is a village in the parish of Bispingen.

Virtually no other heathland village is as multi-faceted as Behringen.

Home to Brunau Lake, Behringen enjoys a privileged location right on the edge of Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve, is within easy reach of many recreational activities and offers direct access to the A7 motorway. Needless to say, it has been one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Lüneburg Heath region for a good number of decades.

On the outskirts of the village, Behringer Heath is the perfect place for a moorland walk and a great starting point for a longer hike or bike ride through the most beautiful parts of  Lüneburg Heath. The well-known Totengrund cirque, the Wilseder hill and the listed heathland village of Wilsede are only 4 to 6 kilometres away from Behringen.

The accredited long-distance hiking trail, the Heidschnuckenweg, was opened in July 2012. It stretches from Hamburg-Fischbek to Celle, taking in various sites of interest along the way, including Behringer Heath, our village park and Brunau Lake, before continuing along the Brunau towards Borstel, Hützel and Bispingen. The Heidschnuckenweg was voted Germany's most beautiful hiking trail in 2014.

Experience the pure romanticism of the heath! You can enjoy the unique landscapes of the heath on foot, bike, horseback or from the comfort of a horse-drawn carriage, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the tranquillity of the great outdoors – and maybe even meeting a shepherd with his flock of Heidschnucken along the way.

Brunausee – a lake covering some 70,000 m² – lies on the other side of the village, in an idyllic wooded area. A hiking trail (about 3 km) circles the lake, which is also popular for fishing and swimming. Pedaloes are available for rent from the lakeside Café/Restaurant Seeterrasse.

Behringen also hosts an extensive calendar of events, including guided tours by bike and horse-drawn carriage rides through the nature reserve, special Butterkuchen afternoons dedicated to this local speciality, baking evenings, barbecues and evening musical performances.

The annual Behringer Seefest takes place on the first weekend in August and is popular with locals as well as visitors from further afield. One of the festival’s highlights is the ‘illuminated water display’ – put on by Behringen’s volunteer fire service – which is followed by a wonderful firework display.

Besides the beautiful countryside, Behringen also has a lot of fun activities for young people. A quad track next to Brunau Lake is a 500-metre sandy trail where children aged 8 and up can have fun driving their own quad. And if that’s not a big enough adrenalin rush, there’s Ralf Schumacher's Kart & Bowl Centre just 1 km down the road, just off the A7, which offers plenty of fun on the indoor and outdoor tracks. And what about skiing – all year round? The pistes of the Bispinger Snow Dome, around 2 km outside Behringen, is open all year round.

Behringen is not lacking in spa facilities either, with HeideSpa Behringen offering a sauna area, danarium, sun shower, collagen solarium, nail studio, massages, beauty salon and yoga.
